Gynecomastia

Gynaecomastia is a condition that affects mostly male teenagers and older men. It is a medical term that encapsulates a number of reasons that can cause boys’ breasts to swell and become bigger than normal. Despite what many might think, ‘man boobs’ and their symptoms can affect at least 30% of males during their lifetime – even if they have achieved considerable weight loss and maintain an active, balanced lifestyle – making it a commonplace problem.

This issue is mainly caused by a hormone imbalance, which is why it usually first appears during your teenage years when most men tend to have differing levels of testosterone and estrogen. Although excess breast tissue usually dissipates as males grow older, deposits of fat can linger into adulthood should estrogen hormone levels peak sharply.

These hormones play a considerable role in enlarged breasts later in life too, as the production of testosterone decreases when men age. Combined with the fact that older gentlemen tend to retain more body fat, which also causes the body to create a larger amount of estrogen, side effects of medicines for conditions such as heart disease and illegal drugs like anabolic steroids can also speed up the process of breast tissue growth.

As this condition has so many different factors – impacting men at almost any stage of their life – many patients have quietly struggled with its mental and physical symptoms for years. Gynaecomastia can be incredibly isolating, stopping people from enjoying all the great things life can offer when you feel comfortable both in and out of your clothes.

We believe that everyone deserves to live their lives free of shame and embarrassment. This is why we use leading surgical techniques to give patients the flat chest they have always dreamed of, with incredibly successful results.

As well as the obvious, visual benefits of having a more masculine chest appearance, the joys of a gynaecomastia surgery procedure can run much deeper. Often without truly realising it, thousands of men struggle with their mental health as a result of poor body image. Depression and anxiety caused by body dysmorphic thoughts and the fear of certain social situations can eat away at you over the years, stopping you from taking that dip in the pool on holiday or saying yes to a game of football after work.

Following recovery after surgery, our patients not only see – but feel – a huge change in themselves, often getting back into normal activities with newfound confidence and excitement. Recovery time for this type of procedure is much quicker than many patients usually expect, with most being able to enjoy their new chest just a month after surgery. It’s not a long wait to change your life and experience the many benefits of gynaecomastia surgery.
