Liposuction —
contour surgery,
not a weight-loss procedure

Liposuction is planned according to contour goals, tissue characteristics, and how the skin is expected to behave after fat removal. I use SAFELipo as the baseline approach, with ultrasound-assisted, radiofrequency-assisted, or laser-assisted adjuncts added selectively when they offer a clearer benefit.

What is liposuction?

Contouring, not weight loss

Liposuction is not a weight-loss treatment. It is used to remove localised fat deposits that do not respond proportionally to diet and exercise, and to improve contour in areas where fat distribution is structurally resistant.

The best candidates are close to a stable, healthy weight, in good general health, and seeking contour improvement rather than major volume change. Skin quality is a key part of planning, because the final result depends not only on fat removal, but also on how the tissues retract afterwards.

SAFELipo — baseline technique, selective adjuncts
SAFELipo is a three-step approach based on fat separation, aspiration, and equalisation. I use it as my baseline liposuction technique because it supports smoother contour transition, more controlled fat removal, and better management of the remaining fat layer. Ultrasound-assisted or radiofrequency-assisted adjuncts may be added selectively when tissue characteristics or skin behaviour make them more useful. In selected areas, endolaser may also be considered as a more focused energy-based adjunct. The choice is not driven by device preference alone, but by body area, tissue quality, and which option is likely to provide the clearest benefit for that specific patient.
Technique planning

Choosing the right combination

01
SAFELipo (standard)
Used as the baseline technique in my liposuction planning. Three-step: separation, aspiration, equalization. Preserves vascular integrity, supports more favourable skin retraction, and helps reduce contour irregularities and the likelihood of revision.
02
Ultrasound-Assisted Liposuction (UAL)
Ultrasound-Assisted Liposuction (UAL) may be added in selected areas when the tissue is more fibrous or when more precise definition is planned. This can include systems such as VASER. It is an adjunct to the main liposuction plan, not the operation itself.
03
Radiofrequency and energy-based tightening adjuncts
Radiofrequency-Assisted Liposuction (RFAL) or related energy-based skin-tightening adjuncts may be considered when tissue contraction is an important part of the plan and excisional surgery is not the preferred first option. Depending on the area and indication, this may include systems such as BodyTite, Renuvion (formerly J-Plasma), or argon plasma-based options.
04
Access and anaesthesia planning
In selected patients, single-area liposuction can be performed under local anaesthesia alone and may be managed as a day-case procedure. Broader-area treatment, including 360 liposuction, more often requires general anaesthesia, and in selected situations a stay of 1–2 nights may be appropriate. Incisions are planned to remain under 1 cm and, where suitable, are placed in skin folds or other more concealable areas.
05
Garment and compression
Compression starts immediately after surgery and usually continues for 4–6 weeks. Its role is not cosmetic detail alone; it supports tissue adaptation and helps the contour settle more evenly during recovery.
Indications

When liposuction is most useful

Liposuction works best when the following conditions are met.

Stubborn fat resistant to diet and exercise
Weight within a healthy range or close to goal weight
Good skin elasticity in the treatment area
Realistic expectations — contouring, not transformation
Non-smoker or committed to stopping before surgery
Stable weight for at least 6 months
Recovery

What to expect after surgery

Swelling resolves gradually after liposuction, and contour definition improves in stages rather than all at once. Early improvement is visible sooner, but the final result usually becomes clearer over 3–6 months as oedema settles and tissue contraction progresses. In the early period, swelling, mild fluid leakage, and temporarily uneven contour can all be part of the normal course, which is why the final contour cannot be judged too early. Compression, movement, and weight stability all influence the quality of the final contour.

Common questions

The fat cells removed do not return. However, remaining fat cells can still enlarge with significant weight gain. Maintaining a stable weight preserves the result long-term.
The goal of liposuction is the best possible contour with the lowest possible risk — volume removed is a byproduct of that objective, not a target in itself. The aim is not to remove the maximum possible volume, but to achieve the best contour with the safest physiological plan.
Standard liposuction simply aspirates fat. SAFELipo first separates fat (preserving vascular connections), then aspirates, then equalises remaining fat. This reduces contour irregularities, improves skin retraction, and lowers revision rates significantly.
Yes — frequently combined with tummy tuck, BBL, and breast procedures. Combining in a single anaesthetic reduces overall recovery time and is often the most efficient approach for international patients.
Most international liposuction patients stay in Istanbul for 5–7 days. Consultation, tests, surgery, and first follow-up all take place here. A compression garment is provided before departure. Video check-ups and WhatsApp access continue throughout recovery.
Not reliably on its own. If skin laxity is more pronounced, the plan may need to include an additional tightening strategy or excisional surgery.
Yes. Temporary numbness or altered sensation can happen during early recovery and usually improves gradually over time.
Minor irregularity can appear early while swelling is still active. In most cases, the contour reads more clearly over the following weeks and continues to refine over several months.
